Songkran is celebrated from April 13 to 15 as a Buddhist New Year throughout Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. During this period, people from all parts of the country flock there to enjoy the water festival.

Traditionally, it was centered on the temple, with giving of alms to monks, the washing of Buddha images and the building of sand castles on the temple grounds.

The Thai people celebrate this festival with water. Everyone gets soaking wet, since it is the hottest season of the year. During the afternoon of the 13th, Buddha images are bathed as part of the ceremony.

On this day friends exchange greeting cards. But today, Songkran is celebrated in the streets with exuberant water fights, complete with water pistols, hoses and the like. In Bangkok, during this festival every street gets soaked with water and it's very difficult to find a dry place.

Hours vary with event.
